Creating Style from Fashion - With Hilary O'Carroll, Colour Me Beautiful, 25th October, Tower Hotel

“You can be fashionable without being stylish. You can be stylish without being cutting-edge. How can you use this season’s fashion to strike the right balance in business?  Is charcoal grey or chocolate brown your best black? What message are you giving when you wear navy?  Can red-heads wear red or blondes wear black?”

Network Waterford were delighted to welcome back the award winning image consultant Hilary O'Carroll. Hilary entertained use with her ideas on how to use fashion to create a look that suits your business, lifestyle, budget and personality. Having worked for international organisations for more than 30 years, Hilary is acutely aware of the importance of creating the right impression while, at the same time, not losing your own sense of individuality.

To open the event Siobhan Wall of Anvil House Wellness Centre introduced the concept of the "Wellness Home" looking at our home environment, which can be one of the most toxic environments for us. Siobhan identified and offer simple solutions to deal with and protect ourselves from the toxins and hazards we could encounter within our homes. www.healthyoptions.ie

Expressionism and the Art of Website Design, Christine Shanahan, Concept, 27th Sept, Tower Hotel

Christine ShanahanThe autumn programme of Network Waterford events kicked off with an eclectic mix of art workshop and web design.

The evening was a fun opportunity to look at new ways to identify and express what you and your business, or career, is really all about. The "key" words that express the way you think about your business can be expressed visually.

Guest facilitator Christine Shanahan, director of web design company Concept, has a background in Fine Art and is a former Art & Design teacher. An experienced Art Therapist, Christine has been responsible for the creative and administrative aspects of Concept since 1996.

The relaxed environment allowed for the exploration of the positive elements associated business life and the way personality and energy is expressed in business. At the same time offering an insight into the way colour and layout can influence the way you feel and think when surfing the net.

Christine, a former president of Network Waterford, hopes that members will bring along friends and colleagues to this informative, informal and creative evening. "The evening is not just for people with a web site.  In the current environment it is vital that we find a way to allow our personalities and energy be expressed positively during the part of our life we call the working day. It is not always easy to remember why we put so much energy into our job."

Concept offers a complete Internet service -from registering domain names and site hosting to developing e-commerce enabled solutions. It s company policy that sites are user friendly, meeting the needs of computer users with disabilities.  Through their ongoing involvement in the Arts, Concept are sponsors of the IMAGINE, Waterford's annual arts festival.

The Art Of Thriving under Pressure, Wednesday 31 May, Valerie Pierce, author

Career development or change Growing relationships Positive human resource management
Realising personal goals or dreams Effective parenting ...
As the blurb in the back of Valerie Pierce’s recent book /(Quick Thinking On Your Feet)/ states “Whatever your purpose, how you think about it – and more importantly, how you get others to think about it – will be the key to your success.”
The May event was fun, informative and thought provoking. Valerie's excellent presentation on five of the possible ten “Tricks of Manipulation” had something for everyone in the audience.
For the closing segment we were all glued to the extract from classic courtroom drama “12 Good Men”, ticking off the five manipulative tricks we had been discussing and quickly picking up on the others!
Valerie’s profile as a philosopher and training consultant does not do justice to the energy and enthusiasm she brought to the evening. There can be no doubting her ranking as one of the top 50 most influential women in Irish business. The committee enjoyed the opportunity to chat with Valerie before the meeting and is delighted that Valerie has agreed to come back to Waterford for another session.

Described by The Irish Times as a modern philosopher in the marketplace, Valerie believes that success, both in business and in everyday life, depends on clear and effective thinking especially under pressure. The first Clear and Critical Thinking training module was developed in 1990 and since then Valerie has delivered courses and workshops to financial institutions, technology companies, plcs, public sector organisations and MBA students in Ireland, the UK and the US.

She lectures in Entrepreneurship and specialises in the support, education and research of Women-led Businesses in the South-East Region. Comparing and contrasting the statistics as they relate to Ireland in general and the South East in particular.

Margaret's revelations on the initial findings of the recent research, combined with insights based on her own expeience as a self employed business owner, led to a very lively discussion and we look forward to hearing about the research results in the next 12 months.

Effective Networking Techniques -Tricia Murphy - 25th January, Tower Hotel

We’ve all seen it - the person who commands the room at a function. Handshakes, nods and warm greetings abound. They seem to know everyone! How do they do it?

More often that not, it can all be down to effective networking, the art of discovering and utilising connections between people. We all know other people so we all have a network. However, effective networking means moving outside our own immediate network and tapping into new networks, perhaps far beyond the scope of our own.

Networking is very much an acquired ability, which with proper training and practice can be learned and developed. Entering a room filled with strangers can be very daunting unless you have a plan and are prepared for all eventualities. Many people are not born effective networkers - they work at it. Networking is very much an acquired ability, which, with proper training, can be learned, developed and mastered.

Networking can help to win new business both immediately and in the long term. Networking at its most fundamental level involves informing people about your business and tapping into their network of contacts to reach new audiences who might require your services.
